  1. Global Scale: The International Labor Organization (ILO) estimates that there are 40.3 million victims of human trafficking globally, with hundreds of thousands in the United States. The U.S. Department of Justice reportedly provided services to 8,375 human trafficking survivors between 2017 and 2018.
  2. Gender: According to the ILO, 75% of trafficking victims are women and girls, and 25% are children.
  3. Forced Labor and Sex Trafficking: An estimated 24.9 million people are trapped in forced labor, of which 16 million are exploited in the private sector such as domestic work, construction, or agriculture. 4.8 million individuals are victims of forced sexual exploitation.
  4. Profits: Human trafficking generates an estimated $150 billion in illegal profits per year, according to the ILO. Two-thirds of this figure ($99 billion) comes from commercial sexual exploitation, while $51 billion results from forced economic exploitation, including domestic work, agriculture, and other economic activities.
  5. Prosecution: Globally in 2019, there were 11,841 prosecutions and 9,548 convictions for trafficking. This represents a significant increase from the early 2000s, but it's a small fraction of the estimated total number of trafficking instances.
  6. Vulnerability: Conflict and natural disasters can exacerbate vulnerability to trafficking. Displaced people, refugees, and migrants can be targeted by traffickers.
